Program Notes
As with most of my works, the title Ripple Effect came to me after the completion of the piece. This title seemed an apt description of how I came to compose this work: the opening moments of the piece serve as the catalyst for the musical ideas that follow. Elements from the opening, whether harmonic, melodic, textural, timbral, or rhythmic, served to spawn new ideas even if only tangentially related. The result is a piece with a number of contrasting passages, each with roots that can be traced back to the beginning with varying degrees of relatedness but generally gaining intensity as the piece moves forward. Coincidentally, as I now look back on the work, there are moments in the piece that could potentially be heard as "ripples," although any resemblance is purely coincidental.
