Program Notes
Recurrency for cello octet was conceived as a quasi-passacaglia. The recurring nine notes (C-E-D-E-F-G-G#-B-G-Bb) are stated by itself in the beginning, and, from there on, is buried within the piece. The piece is not by any means a strict passacaglia - certain notes of the ground bass pattern may last several measures while the others may be passed over within a single beat. Also, while the piece is centered around C for the beginning portion of the piece, the pitch center moves around the notes of the passacaglia (so the next section is E centered, then D centered and so on). The passacaglia form gradually disintegrates until it completely disappears and for the final portion of the piece, the original nine notes come back to become the motive for the ending.
